Poetry

Guerra Prolongada/Protracted War

Guerra prolongada/Protracted War is a meditation on the discombobulation, bitterness and sorrow inextricably linked to life as an exile.

Rodríguez's poems speak of memory as an instrument of survival and denunciation as a form of struggle; they explore the meaning of "home"; at a time of displacement and propose that connectedness is the only way forward. In a world in which so many have been forced into exile, these poems bear witness and offer encouragement and hope.

Women's Press, Toronto, 1992.

Special Mention of the Confederation Poets Prize for the poem "Positions," in this volume. Selected by P.K. Page.

Out of print.

Carmen's next book of bilingual poetry will be 'Lar'

I recognize my country

in the long dark hollow of your back

let me wrap myself in the quiet of your skin and rest

the world is so big it’s so cold out there

carry me inside your house of murmurs and bones

the only one I have

Chile existed so long ago

                 the blue of the ocean

                 the height of the snow

                 southern rain

                 Macul in the fall

                 Valdivia river pushing life towards

                                          Niebla Mancera

my love

I have wanted you for so long

searched for you for so long

now I’m here in you

don’t let me leave
